Ask a burning question about This Brush for Hire: Norm Laich & Many Other Artists to artist and exhibition co-curator John Baldessari. Questions may be submitted on site, via email at learning@theicala.org, or via ICA LA’s Twitter handle @theicala with the hashtag #AskJohnBaldessari.

Submission period: Aug 1 to Sept 3, 2018

Select questions will be answered by Baldessari in a special Yellow Pages post on ICA LA’s website.

John Baldessari was born in National City, California. He attended San Diego State University and did post-graduate work at Otis Art Institute, Chouinard Art Institute, and the University of California at Berkeley. He taught at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, CA from 1970–1988 and the University of California at Los Angeles from 1996–2007. Baldessari’s artwork has been featured in more than 200 solo exhibitions and in over 1000 group exhibitions in the U.S. and Europe. His projects include artist books, videos, films, billboards, and public works. Baldessari currently works in Venice, California.

Meg Cranston works explores the intersections of personal experience, popular culture, and the formal language of art. She examines the shared knowledge and meaning-making of today’s culture through painting, sculpture, collage, and video. She also investigates these themes as a writer and curator of remarkable exhibition subjects as This Brush for Hire: Norm Laich & Many Other Artists.

Cranston was born in Baldwin, New York. She received an MFA from California Institute of the Arts and a BA in Anthropology and Sociology from Kenyon College. Cranston has shown her work in sculpture, performance, and video, along with public and curatorial projects, at numerous major institutions both nationally and internationally. Together with Hans Ulrich Obrist, she is co-editing a book of the collected writings of artist John Baldessari to be published by JRP Ringier, Zürich. She is Chair of the Fine Arts Department at Otis College of Art and Design.
