ICA LA Artist Edition + Raffle: Charles Gaines

November 13, 2021
5 PM - 8 PM
Fundraiser
Offsite
Special Projects

ICA LA is proud to announce the launch of a new artist edition series. The first edition in the series is by renowned artist, educator, and longtime ICA LA Board member Charles Gaines. Sound Box takes the form of a wooden bookshelf speaker. In place of the speaker cones are vinyl records, each containing a rendition of the powerfully evocative 1939 song “Strange Fruit", written in response to a horrifying era of lynching. Gaines’s rendition evokes the ongoing legacies of this violent history while also speaking to the ways that music and the visual arts have been instrumental among communities of color to process, mourn, and raise awareness. Sound Box will be the first work in which Gaines has chosen to perform himself, singing the first verse of “Strange Fruit” while accompanied by noted pianist Basia Bochenek.

This limited edition is available for sale and raffle tickets are also available for purchase at $500 per ticket. One lucky raffle winner will be announced at ICA LA’s Fall Benefit on Saturday, November 13. This winner will receive the Artist Proof of the edition Sound Box: Billie Holiday and Josh White, 2021. Each edition will include a Certificate of Authenticity signed by Charles Gaines.

For inquiries about this new edition, or to purchase a raffle ticket, please contact info@theicala.org.
