How do artists, scientists, and architects model geologic time? This POV tour by architectural scholar, curator, and designer Jia Yi Gu considers Carl Cheng: Nature Never Loses through the history of analog modeling, exploring how these devices simulate processes of erosion, weathering, and other environmental forces that exceed the capacity of human observation.

Jia Yi Gu is an architectural scholar, curator, and designer whose projects explore the materiality of buildings and the history of cultural techniques in architecture. She develops research and curatorial projects, publications, and programs about architecture and its wide-ranging practices. As an architectural historian, her research examines the history of material experimentation by architects with a focus on testing protocols, mock-ups, and experimental infrastructures through which architects explored material processes such as weathering. With Kate Chiu, she co-curated the Getty PST ART project Material Acts, an interdisciplinary exhibition and material library exploring experimentation in design and architecture at the intersections of architecture, craft, and science, presented at Craft Contemporary.
