This snow globe is an ethereal white rendering of a gnarled Bristlecone Pine that grew for roughly 5,000 years on the eastern fringes of the Great Basin.

The tree, called Prometheus, took root at the dawn of the Bronze Age—several centuries before the ancient Egyptians began construction of the pyramids at Giza. It survived the rise and fall of the Roman Empire; European colonialism; the Mexican-American war; and the atom bomb. But, it was defenseless against the chainsaw crew that inadvertently cut it down over 50 years ago in the name of science.

The snow globes bearing Prometheus’s likeness weren’t produced with the intention of making a buck off of tourists. They were part of an elaborate happening orchestrated by Jeff Weiss Collective to commemorate the death of a tree named for the Greek Titan who stole fire for humanity, then paid for the sin by being chained to a mountain, where an eagle ate his liver on a daily basis.
