Join us for a special POV Tour of Scientia Sexualis with exhibition artist KING COBRA and catalogue contributor and art historian Amber Jamilla Musser. Explore a selection of works through the perspectives of these two individuals. They will be joined by exhibition co-curators Jennifer Doyle and Jeanne Vaccaro. POV Tours are open-ended walk-throughs where attendees learn and participate in discussions about the art on view.
Amber Jamilla Musser is Professor of English at the CUNY Graduate Center and the author of Sensational Flesh: Race, Power, and Masochism (2014) and Sensual Excess: Queer Feminity and Brown Jouissance (2018).
KING COBRA (documented as Doreen Lynette Garner) is a sculptor and performance artist whose practice confronts colonial histories of violence. Often made from silicone, pearls, synthetic hair, urethane foam, and other materials, COBRA’s sculptures primarily depict mutilated Black bodies, and frequently expose the medical malpractice and pathological infirmities experienced by Black women in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and early twentieth centuries.
