El Museo de Tronquito: Bilingual Reading and Art Workshop

April 07, 2018
3 PM - 6 PM
Families

In the book El Museo de Tronquito, author Ashild Kanstad Johsen tells the story of Tronquito, a lively character who finds lots of treasures in the forest where he lives—a forgotten umbrella, lost glasses, or a nice green leaf fallen from a tree. He catalogues and stores each object in beautiful green boxes until one day there is no more room to keep so much treasure. After consulting with his wise grandmother, Tronquito decides to open a museum featuring the wonderful found objects.

Join in a Spanish-language reading + English interpretation of the book with LA Líbreria, a Spanish-language children’s book shop in Los Angeles. The reading will be followed by a hands-on art workshop that explores the process of selecting and curating objects for exhibition. Participants will be able select from an array of interesting and miscellaneous items to put into small displays.

Author and illustrator Ashild Kandstad Johnson was born in Bergen, Norway on October 23, 1978. She is an author, illustrator, and painter. She studied visual communication at the Academy of Arts in Bergen. El Museo de Tronquito is her debut as an illustrator of children’s books, which was awarded Norway’s Most Beautiful Book of the Year in 2011.

The program is made possible through the Marfa Book Company collaboration with ICA LA underwritten by Michael Silver.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Please arrive on time for the workshop. There will be a reading at 3:30pm and the opportunity to receive a tour of the exhibition Harald Szeemann—Grandfather: A Pioneer Like Us.
