Alberta Whittle’s work looks at the existence of oppression—from anti-blackness to the climate crisis—and the possibilities of self-compassion and healing. The artist has turned to such powerful poetic voices Kamau Brathwaite and Raha Nat for strength.

In partnership with Reparations Club, enjoy an evening of poetry readings and a beading workshop inspired by themes explored by Alberta Whittle with her exhibition at ICA LA, between a whisper and a cry. Wine and light refreshments will be served.

Alberta Whittle (b. 1980, Bridgetown, Barbados; lives and works in Glasgow) works across several mediums, including drawing, digital collage, film and video installation, sculpture, performance, and writing. Whittle’s practice prioritizes questions of self-care and compassion, while considering the historic legacies and contemporary expressions of anti-Blackness, colonialism, and migration. She often utilizes archival materials and found footage in her work, which is frequently produced in collaboration with her accomplices—a network of artists, choreographers, and performers.

Reparations Club is an ICA LA Bookshelf Resident and concept bookshop & creative space curated by Blackness® in Los Angeles, CA. As the premier Black-woman owned bookshop in Los Angeles, Rep Club has partnered with Well Read Black Girl, Noname’s Book Club, Nike x Virgil Abloh, Beyoncé, and has been featured in the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Washington Post & many more.
