Join dancer Roxanne Steinberg for a special tour of Milford Graves: Fundamental Frequency at ICA LA.
In 1980, Steinberg saw a performance with Milford Graves and Min Tanaka at Bennington College. The performance provided an epiphany and her life became devoted to dance and body-based performance practice. She moved to Japan and worked with Tanaka on the development of Body Weather Laboratory, a forum for movement investigation, eventually bringing the organization to Los Angeles.
Roxanne Steinberg dances to transcend familiar vocabularies and bring about a heightened sense of perception and connectivity, flowing from pop to primordial associations. A graduate of Bennington College, her work in performance, choreography and improvisation brought her to Japan and to Body Weather Farm. She introduced practice of Body Weather Laboratory training in Los Angeles in 1988 at LACE gallery. In 1990 she and her partner Oguri created the La Boca Theatre with Sarah Elgart at the Sunshine Mission/Casa de Rosas, the oldest shelter for homeless women in Los Angeles. She has led BWL workshop at the Electric Lodge in Venice since 1997, where as an artist-in-residence, she produces Flower of the Season presenting dancers, musicians and artists. She teaches and performs worldwide, solo, with Oguri, sister Morleigh Steinberg, and in collaborations with artists, composers and dancers. She is part of Lauren Bon’s art practice at the Metabolic Studio. Delving into the phenomenon of dance as a vehicle to knowing, she seeks myriad existences for body and psyche appreciating the ephemerality of dance within constructed environments full of objects of nostalgia. She was a 2020 recipient of the Department of Cultural Affairs City of Los Angeles (COLA) Individual Artist Fellowship.
