At 2pm, join us for a Book Talk with Nina Holland, co-founder of Little Steidl; artist Greg Colson; and Glenn Phillips, Senior Curator, Head of Exhibitions and Head of Modern & Contemporary Collections at the Getty Research Institute. The talk will be followed by a reception from 3-5pm.

Nina Holland is a Los Angeles native whose work spans all aspects of bookmaking, including design, typography, imaging, printing, and binding. She studied both music and visual art from early childhood, attending the CalArts Youth Program and Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences and then earning her BA in liberal arts from Sarah Lawrence College. She is the author of Glen Seator: Making Things Moving Places, a 14-volume catalogue raisonné of the sculptural work of Glen Seator (forthcoming from Steidl) for which she received major grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, the Judith Rothschild Foundation, and the Peter and Carmen Lucia Buck Foundation. She has worked in creative collaboration with the German publisher Gerhard Steidl for more than twenty years. In 2011, Holland moved to Göttingen to master the art of offset lithographic printing at Steidl and today carries the Steidl name and working tradition into a second generation as the director of the Little Steidl publishing house. Holland’s work comes out of long-term collaborations with contemporary artists, including Lawrence Weiner, Chuck Close, John Baldessari, Graciela Iturbide, Jan von Holleben, Robert Therrien, Anthony Wilson, Glen Seator, and Greg Colson, among others.

Greg Colson is a Los Angeles based artist whose work is marked by a jarringly direct commingling of material and conceptual elements. By drawing out the poetry and humor in our social patterns, Colson seems to suggest there are limits to - and hazards inherent in - our obsession with efficiency, data, and analysis. HIs art has been the subject of solo exhibitions internationally including Sperone Westwater Gallery in New York, William Griffin Gallery in Los Angeles, Konrad Fischer Galerie in Dusseldorf, Kunsthalle Lophem in Bruges, and the Lannan Museum in Lake Worth. Colson’s works are held in collections throughout the United States and Europe, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; and the Panza Collection, Varese, Italy.

Glenn Phillips is Senior Curator, Head of Exhibitions, and Head of Modern and Contemporary Collections at the Getty Research Institute. His recent curatorial projects include Video Art in Latin America (2017); Harald Szeemann: Museum of Obsessions and Grandfather: A Pioneer Like Us (2018); and Blondell Cummings: Dance as Moving Pictures (2021). He is currently working on an autobiographical exhibition of Barbara T. Smith that will open at the GRI in February 2023.
