Marcus Kuiland-Nazario: Father Figure

July 24, 2019
7 PM - 9 PM
Workshops

18th Street Arts Center’s current Artist Lab resident Marcus Kuiland-Nazario leads a collage workshop in conjunction with MACHO STEREO, a project and exhibit on view at 18th Street from June 1 to July 26, 2019. Participants of all genders are welcome to attend any or all of the Father Figure workshops to create autobiographical collages about themselves and their Father or Father Figure.

If you can, please bring pictures, documents, photographs, deeds, certificates, awards, diplomas, ephemera significant to the history of your father, especially if they feature you as well! These images will be carefully duplicated on a color copier to form the basis of your Father Figure collage. All items will be handled with care and returned at the end of the workshop.

Workshops will open with a participatory discussion about our Father Figures led by Marcus Kuiland-Nazario in consultation with MACHO STEREO collaborator and therapist Mario Prietto. Workshops are for adults 18+ of all genders. Materials will be supplied.

MACHO STEREO is a new body of work by Marcus Kuiland-Nazario based on the 1955 Mexican novel, Pedro Páramo, by Juan Rulfo. The story, which hinges on the reunion between an estranged father and son, has been influential in Latin America but remains largely unknown in the United States. Kuiland-Nazario will create a performance and installation in the Atrium Gallery at 18th Street Arts Center, based on interviews collected at the Santa Monica Public Library.

The Father Figure collage workshop was created as part of the Artist Lab residency program at the 18th Street Arts Center, in conjunction with the Brentwood Art Center.
