For the closing weekend of Maryam Jafri’s exhibition I Drank the Kool-Aid but I Didn’t Inhale, Maryam Jafri will join ICA Curator Jamillah James to discuss her process using research and interdisciplinary approaches to make work of conceptual inquiry on such perennial subjects as consumer culture, representation, economics, and politics. The discussion will be part of a tour of Jafri’s exhibition followed by refreshments and light snacks.

I Drank the Kool-Aid but I Didn’t Inhale is Jafri’s first solo presentation in the US, which combines framed texts, “still life” product photography, and unsuccessful food products from the private archives of anonymous food industry figures.

Maryam Jafri, Maryam Jafri (b. 1972) is an artist working across media and genres—video, sculpture, performance, and photography. Informed by a research based, interdisciplinary process, her artworks are often marked by a visual language poised between film and theater and a series of narrative experiments oscillating between script and document, fragment and whole. Her work has been featured in solo exhibitions at the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands; Kunsthalle Basel; Gasworks, London; and group presentations at the 2018 Front International: Cleveland Triennial for Contemporary Art; Sao Paolo Biennial; 2014 Venice Biennale; Manifesta 9; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Detroit, among others. She holds a BA in English & American Literature from Brown University, an MA from NYU/Tisch School of The Arts and is a graduate of the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program. She lives and works in New York and Copenhagen.
