In conjunction with Lucas Blalock: An Enormous Oar, art historian and writer Daniel Spaulding will explore comparatively the visual art of Lucas Blalock and Bertolt Brecht’s critical writings. Selections from Brecht on Theatre: The Development of an Aesthetic—a pivotal text for Blalock—will provide the foundation for Spaulding’s discussion.

Daniel Spaulding is an art historian, writer, editor, and translator living in Los Angeles, where he works in the curatorial department at the Getty Research Institute and teaches at ArtCenter College of Design. He received a PhD in art history from Yale in 2017. Daniel’s writings have appeared in such publications as Art Journal, X-TRA Contemporary Art Quarterly, October, and Historical Materialism; he is also a founding editor of Selva, a new peer-reviewed art history journal. In his spare time, Daniel is active as a translator from German, Italian, and French, and serves on the organizing committee of The Public School Los Angeles, a space for radical communal self-education in Chinatown.
