Henry Taylor Studio Visit
On Saturday, April 21st in downtown Los Angeles, friends and supporters of ICA LA visited the studio of artist Henry Taylor in anticipation of our upcoming Benefit Brunch in honor of the painter. Taylor, who is known for his bold and empathetic portraits of close friends, family members, local characters, and subjects he encounters while travelling, had just returned from an extensive trip to Asia where he opened a solo exhibition in Tokyo. During the visit, he granted guests an intimate tour through his working space, revealing works in progress and discussing his take on painting’s current role in contemporary art. The conversation about his practice ranged from questions surrounding his upbringing in Oxnard, California and the teachers who sparked his interest in art, to larger societal concerns, like police violence and the history of civil rights activism in the United States.
