Laying the groundwork

ICA LA is excited to share Laying Groundwork for Shared Practices—a collaboratively authored document reflecting the March 2025 convening of LA performers and visual arts organizations co-organized by Dorothy Dubrule (performer and editor of the recently released Being Work) and Chloë Flores (Executive Director and Curator of homeLA), and hosted by the Feminist Center for Creative Work.

With contributions from John Burtle, Jay Carlon, Amelia Charter, Alexsa Durrans, Mara McCarthy, taisha paggett, Amanda Sroka, and additional support from devika wickremesinghe, samantha mohr, and Alex Sloane, this document gathers insights, values, and proposed standards for supporting movement-based work within visual arts contexts. It names challenges and offers practices across contracts, compensation, installation, documentation, and care—laying a foundation for shared understanding and more equitable labor conditions in our field.

We invite you to read and share the document. It’s also accompanied by a reference library that acknowledges the cultural workers whose advocacy helped shape this effort.
