Gray’s ICA LA edition, Euclidean Meta Gris Gris, is a single framed photograph within which a selection of photographs from Gray’s archive appear juxtaposed against and atop one another in various scales and configurations. Layered within this work is imagery of Michael Jackson’s iconic and bejeweled red leather jacket, a depiction of the night sky, a precisely manicured European garden, and a West African ritual scene. At the center of the edition, haloed in a white border, is a photograph of Gray’s 2018 work, titled Euclidean Gris Gris (2), which is held in the Whitney Museum of American Art collection. The work is composed of four photographs, each in their own found frames that sculpturally stack together on the wall. While pointing to the use of “meta” in the artwork title, Gray’s inclusion and manipulation of this earlier work in the ICA LA edition speaks to the artist’s enduring interrogation of framing as a structural device, both literally and socio-politically.
