Ayanna U’Dongo is a self-trained, experimental video artist who utilizes the medium to heal herself and others. Talking @theicala Open House earlier this month she said, “I found who I am through video”. Since discovering #videoart while working @videodatabank in Chicago in 1991, she began to explore #sexuality #gender and cultural #identity as a means to provoke and celebrate #diversity, #inclusion, #freedom and #sacrifice. ‘sisters and brothers’ presents a selection of early black queer video works from artists Jaguar Mary (Jocelyn Taylor), Cauleen Smith, and Ayanna U’Dongo spanning 1993 to 2000. This was a critical time for video as a medium, marked by the ebb of magnetic tape cassette and the rise of multiple forms of digital recording. Feminism, sexuality and race contribute to the shifting social changes in the early 1990s that framed much of the art produced at the time by people of color, women and the LGBTQ community. This group exhibition is organised by guest curator Jackie Clay and presented in collaboration with @_dirtylooks_ - a bi-coastal platform for #queer time-based #art. ‘sisters and brothers’ occupies our Annex and is made possible by the ICA LA’s Curator’s Council – the exhibition continues through June 17 @theicala | #sistersandbrothers #videoart #icala
