In the final instalment of artist Patty Chang’s takeover for @theicala during Women’s History Month @womeninthearts, Chang introduces the late artist Theresa Hak Kyung Cha: “Theresa Hak Kyung Cha’s landmark novel, ‘Dictee’ (1982) used language in a pioneering way. Cha (1951-1982 ) of South Korean origin, opened up a way to think about #language #art #immigration and otherness through the practice of combining lists with autobiography, poetry and letters”. Informed by a research-based, interdisciplinary process across varied media, Pakistani-born artist Maryam Jafri questions the cultural and visual representation of #history #politics and #economy. Living and working between Copenhagen and New York, Jafri’s research topics have included advertising, copyright law and the politics of food. On view at ICA LA, ‘I Drank the Kool-Aid But I Didn’t Inhale’ is a presentation of the artist’s body of work, ‘Product Recall: An Index of Innovation (2014–15)’ - a collection of failed product launches, from baby food for adults and cat food to injudicious branding of chocolates and meals in a box. ‘I Drank the Kool-Aid But I Didn’t Inhale’ continues in the Project Room @theicala through June 30 📷Elon Schoenholz | #maryamjafri #icala

Can you name 5 women artists? We asked ICA LA artist Patty Chang to select her #5WomenArtists this month: “Kate Gilmore creates videos where her body is the activator. Her performative acts of breaking things – feminist, bold, unapologetic – create unexpected, visually arresting compositions within the frame” | #kategilmore #pattychang #icala

This Saturday, March 23 join LA Times staff writer Carolina Miranda and Jeff Weiss Collective for #art talk ‘Remembering the Remembrance’ about ‘The Mega Collector’s VIP Gallery’ and the Prometheus Project. The project takes the form of a vending machine in the museum, selling limited-edition snow globes of ‘Prometheus’, a Great Basin Bristlecone Pine tree (pictured) - thought to be the oldest known living thing on earth that lived more than 5,100 years before it was felled in 1964. The talk will explore the history and various stages of the project by Jeff Weiss Collective through an experimental audio journey. ‘Remembering the Remembrance’ is a free event, part of Learning and Engagement @theicala this Saturday at 3pm - RSVP required | #icala

“Jafri researched the archives of food branding consultants, and from their notes, tracked down now-obsolescent goods from eBay or flea markets. She then assembled a series of readymades of doomed household products. Outmoded consumables, propped up on plinths like exotica found in ethnographic museums…” - Yxta Murray @contemporaryartreview.la reviews ‘I Drank the Kool-Aid But I Didn’t Inhale’ by Maryam Jafri in the Project Room @theicala through June 30. #5WomenArtists continues with ICA LA artist Patty Chang’s takeover this month. Today Chang introduces a series of works by New York-based artist @jcjstudio: “These works, from Jennie C. Jones’ ‘Amplitude’ series (2017), are examples of her powerful but subtle approach. Her work, which spans #painting #sculpture and #sound, reframes histories of #modernism in relation to the exclusion of black visual art, infusing abstraction with a certain political power” | #womenshistorymonth #jenniecjones #pattychang #icala

Join artists David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin @brognonrollin this Wednesday, March 20 at 7pm for ‘Whistles, Borders, and Ice Cream Trucks’.
