Artist duo David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin @brognonrollin (pictured) work with raw, often marginal social material, embedding themselves in the field, and in direct conversation with their subject matter. This partnership creates modest monuments that shine light on otherwise overlooked fringes of society. In March 2019, the artists developed a new work, ’Maybe some of us will change this’ as part of their month-long residency with FLAX Foundation @flax_la and @metropolitanhighlausd in downtown #LosAngeles. Inspired by a phrase from a student essay about justice, Brognon-Rollin embarked on a journey to the Mexican border to collaborate with a community in Huautla de Jiménez in #Oaxaca #Mexico - where the whistle language of Mazatec is used - one of the oldest remaining whistled languages in the world. Approaching sound as a medium that has no limits, they recorded the whistle of the phrase ‘maybe some of us will change this’ and allowed it to travel through borders and into the communities the phrase originated from.
