Who Taught You to Feel Good? A night of movement, music, and drinks

January 17, 2020
7 PM - 9:30 PM

Celebrate creativity and community with drinks, music, and performance at ICA LA!

LA’s own Samantha Sidley and her band deliver hauntingly beautiful and ‘quietly radical’ songs, artist jade ariana fair treats us to a musical landscape, The Finger Joint—an itinerant lesbian bar invested in community & conversation—offer special cocktails, and DJ PastelShade cultivates the vibe for the night in homage to the intersectional femme experience.

The evening mirrors the inclusive queer ethos of the current exhibitions open at ICA LA: Sadie Barnette’s New Eagle Creek Saloon, a reimagination of the (artist’s father) first black-owned gay bar in San Francisco, & No Wrong Holes: Thirty Years of Nayland Blake a survey of Blake’s multidisciplinary practice delving into themes of representation, race and gender identity, desire, and play.

All are welcome to join in this evening of celebrating feminist queer voices through music and community!

Tickets: $15
Earlybird special! First 50 tickets: $10

This is the final public program for Play Days: Wrong Edition at the ICA LA.

jade ariana fair (b. San Jose, CA) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Los Angeles, CA. She works across the disciplines of painting, performance, and sound. She is fascinated by the multiplicity of origin stories carried in both tangible objects and intangible lifeforms. Developing a language for transmission of ancestral memories through objects is a central part of her art practice. The body functions both as a vessel for engaging with these memories and experimenting with the outcome of that engagement. One of the possibilities of that experiment is the invention of resourceful, playful and never-before-seen modalities of opening to spirit.

Samantha Sidley is a lifelong Los Angeles-based, proudly queer jazz singer whose debut album ‘Interior Person’ is out now. Declared “quietly radical” by the Los Angeles Times – and named one of its Top Ten Albums of 2019 – Interior Person is a collection of original songs by Alex Lilly, Barbara Gruska and Inara George, exploring the wonders and perils of love, sex, and feminine power through an unapologetically lesbian lens. With longtime collaborators, musical director and multi-instrumentalist Dan Reckard and trombonist Vikram Devasthali – and other surprise guests.

The Fingerjoint is Los Angeles’ only lesbian bar, currently operating as a pop-up as they search for a brick & mortar home. The lesbian bar evolved: inclusive, permanent space for queer people to have a cocktail and a conversation. Any profits from the bar sales will be for femmes experiencing displacement or homelessness.

Nneka Jackson is a Jamaican legal analyst, poet and community organizer based in Los Angeles. Under the umbrella of EEK! A Vagina, she has led QTIPOC writing workshops, book clubs, and events that have featured poetry readings and musical performances in and around LA.

pastelShade – Joy enthusiast and artist pastelShade (they/them) is curious about cultivating the ecstatic on the dancefloor and supporting the resiliency available through body movement, vocal exercise, and memory in relationship to music. Their sets explore femmeness, sexual autonomy, and BIPOC queer narratives. With music selections from funk to trap, oldies to afrobeat, punk to electronic their vibe goal is to center and uplift womxnist notions of liberation.
